National Heritage Area

Sangre De Cristo National Heritage Area

The Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area encompasses Conejos, Costilla and Alamosa counties and more than 3,000 square miles. This National Heritage Area, designated in 2009, showcases the rich history of south central Colorado’s San Luis Valley, home to the state’s earliest settlements and a bounty of natural and historical assets.

The massive area includes portions of the Sangre De Cristo Range, Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, three national wildlife refuges, a national forest, two forest wilderness areas, 15 state wildlife areas, a nature conservancy preserve, 20 cultural properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the headwaters of the Rio Grande River system.

Great Sand Dunes

Only a short drive from Conejos County is one of the most unique landmarks in all of Colorado. 

The Great Sand Dunes are a marvel surrounded surrounded by the majestic Sangre de Cristo mountains.

Scenic Byway

With so many beautiful places to experience in Conejos County you could opt to see the highlights in a half a day from the comfort of your own vehicle. 

Los Caminos Antiguos Scenic & Historic Byway

Los Caminos Antiguos, the Ancient Roads, traces the footsteps of Native Americans, 16th Century Spanish explorers, settlers and miners, as it travels from Alamosa, through Fort Garland, San Luis and Antonito to the border of New Mexico. Along the way are diverse landscapes of snow-capped mountains, lakes, wetlands, vast ranchland, and the tallest sand dunes on the continent at the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve.
